Leave it is an easy command to teach and it is very handy later. It will become a command that means, whatever you want to do, don’t do it and don’t think about it anymore.
Continue this until your dog looks away or stops reaching for the treat. Do not let your dog leave. When your dog stops reaching for the treat or looks away, say OK and reward with a treat. Congratulate your dog for a good job. Success is when you can say Leave it and you can lay out a string of treats in front of your dog and your dog waits until released to gobble them all up. After your dog understands the command very well, you can use the command for almost anything; do not look at that cat or dog, do not eat my dinner, do not pee on their front gate and do not chase that squirrel. |
